Project: Smart Multi-Ratio Optimizer for Photoshop
The goal of this project was to design and develop a specialized Photoshop ExtendScript that moves past the limitations of standard, blind center-cropping. Recognizing that automated batch processing often destroys careful compositions and artificially upscales small files, the Smart Multi-Ratio Optimizer was engineered to give creators total mathematical command over how their digital assets are processed, protected, and exported for modern platforms.
Design approach:
• Focused on compositional control by building a 9-point directional UI, allowing users to pin their crop box exactly where they need it to protect specific subjects or architectural peaks.
• Developed dynamic edge offset math that applies inward percentage margins, automatically sliding the crop box away from the absolute edge of the frame to ensure compositions maintain necessary breathing room.
• Integrated an intelligent upscale protection system that safely halts processing and prompts the user if a file is too small for the target dimensions, completely preventing algorithmic blur and quality loss mid-batch.
• Provided native next-gen export capabilities, enabling users to output highly compressed, SEO-friendly WebP and AVIF files alongside max-quality standard formats like JPEG and PNG.
The script successfully transitioned from a personal workflow utility to a comprehensive tool used to streamline digital delivery for designers and photographers. By combining precise dimension targeting with aspect ratio locks (including 9:16 for mobile-first content), it allows creators to batch-process vast folders of mixed-orientation assets perfectly, saving hours of manual formatting.
What I learned:
• Building workflow automation requires strict user safety guardrails; designing the interactive mid-batch intervention prompt reinforced the importance of preventing destructive actions—like accidental upscaling—without breaking the user's flow.
• Modern tooling must adapt to diverse creative needs; accommodating both the UI designer who needs exact 1920px WebP hero images and the social media manager who needs batch 9:16 vertical crops is essential for creating a truly versatile utility.
